May 7, 2024Mary Wollstonecraft was a fascinating philosophical figure, in part because she didn’t just write philosophical treatises. Like our previous Wise Woman, Margaret Cavendish, she wrote pamphlets and even novels. And she campaigned not just against sexism but against all kinds of inequality.

Virginia Woolf wrote ofVirginia Woolf wrote of Wollstonecraft:
“It was a thousand pities that the woman who could write like that, whose mind was tuned to nature and reflection, should have been forced to anger and bitterness. But how could she have helped herself?”
How did Wollstonecraft’s philosophy reconcile with her sentiments?
